Yonago Waterbird Sanctuary (Mizutori Park)

A Ramsar Convention wetland on Lake Nakaumi and a prime birdwatching site, known as a wintering ground for tundra swans.

About this place

Yonago Waterbird Sanctuary is a natural wetland park located in Hikonanshinden, Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture, facing Lake Nakaumi on the southern shore of the Yumigahama Peninsula. Established in 1995 as a roughly 28-hectare sanctuary (protected area), it was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland site in 2005.

The Lake Nakaumi area boasts a remarkably rich avifauna, with records of approximately 40% of all wild bird species observed in Japan. It is particularly well known as a wintering ground for tundra swans, where the largest wintering flocks in western Japan can be observed. Ducks, herons, greater white-fronted geese, bean geese, and many other waterfowl appear throughout the seasons, making the sanctuary popular with birdwatchers and families alike.

The facility is equipped with observation windows and telescopes, allowing close-up birdwatching regardless of weather. The park is accessible by bus from Yonago Station, and park staff are available on selected days to assist visitors with their observations.
