Tottori Sand Dunes

One of Japan's three great sand dunes, offering paragliding, sandboarding, and camel rides.

About this place

The Tottori Sand Dunes are Japan's largest sand dunes, spreading across Sanin Kaigan National Park. Stretching 2.4 km from north to south and 16 km from east to west, this vast expanse of sand is counted among Japan's three great sand dunes. Wind-sculpted ripple patterns and the steep slope known as the 'Uma no Se' (Horse's Back) create a landscape unlike anywhere else in the country.

A variety of activities are available within the dunes. Visitors can enjoy paragliding experiences, sandboarding down the sandy slopes, and camel rides through the dunes — experiences that are uniquely possible here. The adjacent Sand Museum offers further opportunities to appreciate the art of sand sculpture.

Take a bus from JR Tottori Station for approximately 22 minutes and alight at 'Sakyu Kaikan.' Admission to the dunes is free, and the scenery shifts through many expressions from sunrise to dusk. Come and experience on foot the natural beauty of Japan's coastal sand dunes — so different from a desert.
