Tottori Prefectural Museum

Tottori Prefecture's comprehensive museum, situated at the foot of the historic Tottori Castle ruins.

About this place

The Tottori Prefectural Museum is the prefecture's general museum, located at the foot of the Tottori Castle ruins (Kyushozan). Opened in 1972, it houses permanent exhibitions of approximately 3,000 items spanning four fields: natural history, history, folklore, and fine and decorative arts.

The permanent exhibition offers a wide-ranging introduction to Tottori, from the region's geology and wildlife to the history of the Tottori Domain, folk artifacts, and works of fine and decorative arts associated with the local area — giving visitors a comprehensive understanding of Tottori as a whole. Special exhibitions are held throughout the year, welcoming visitors with diverse themes each time.

The museum is accessible from JR Tottori Station by local bus in approximately 8 minutes, alighting at 'Nishimachi' and then walking about 5 minutes. Combining a visit here with a walk through the historic Tottori Castle ruins offers a deeper appreciation of Tottori's history as a castle town.
