The Sand Museum

The world's only museum dedicated to sand sculpture, with a new theme every year — a destination worth visiting again and again.

About this place

The Sand Museum is the world's only museum dedicated exclusively to sand sculpture, located right alongside the Tottori Sand Dunes in Fukube-cho, Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture. Internationally acclaimed sand sculptors are invited to create large-scale works using only sand and water, which are exhibited indoors.

The exhibition theme changes every year, with the unique concept of portraying different countries and regions of the world through sand sculpture. The 17th exhibition in 2026 is being held under the theme 'Sand World Travel — Spain.' The intricate yet dynamic sand sculptures offer a vivid sense of the extraordinary possibilities of sand as a medium.

Visiting in combination with the Tottori Sand Dunes is the classic itinerary, and the setting — where visitors can appreciate sculptural art while gazing out over the dunes — is itself one of the museum's attractions. Opening hours are 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (last entry 5:30 p.m.), with a seasonal closure period that varies by year.
