A 1,300-year-old radium-rich spring affectionately known as 'the platinum waters.'
Sekigane Onsen is an ancient hot spring in Sekigane-chō, Kurayoshi City, Tottori Prefecture, affectionately known as 'the platinum waters' (Hakkin no Yu) for its exceptionally high radium (radon) content, which ranks among the highest in Japan. The simple radioactive spring waters are said to be effective for rheumatism, neuralgia, and gout, and in 2011 the spring was selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Hot Springs.
The spring is said to have a history of approximately 1,300 years; it once flourished as a post town and medicinal bathing resort at the junction of the Sakushū Highway and the pilgrimage road to Mt. Daisen. Today it is designated a National Health Resort Hot Spring, and several bathing facilities—including the communal bathhouse 'Seki-no-Yu' and the spa center 'Sekigane Yumei-kan'—are scattered through the quiet mountain-valley resort.
Set in lush natural surroundings at the foot of Mt. Daisen, the spring invites a leisurely, therapeutic stay. It is about 20 minutes by car from central Kurayoshi City and makes a convenient base for sightseeing in central Tottori.
