Hōki Town Sightseeing

Nibu-juku (Izumo Kaidō Post Town)

A settlement that retains traces of a former post town on the Izumo Kaidō highway — a place to trace the memories of the old road on foot.

About this place

A post town that once stood in Nibu, former Mizoguichi, along the Izumo Kaidō highway. Positioned between the Mizoguichi-juku post town and the direction of Yonago, it is said to have been a place where travelers lodged, horses were tethered, and goods were relayed. It is also said that the Gotō clan held sway over this area in the late Heian period.

With limited information available online, this is a theme particularly worth exploring on foot by those who live locally. The official Hōki-chō website also holds a local history record titled 'Izumo Kaidō Konjaku Monogatari' (The Izumo Highway, Past and Present), which documents the history of the Nibu district from the feudal era to the present day.

For more detail, see the Nibu-juku article in 'Stories from History.' This article will be expanded gradually through on-site fieldwork.
