A 800-meter yokai-themed promenade lined with 178 bronze statues, perfect for a half-day course paired with a seafood bowl.
Mizuki Shigeru Road is a yokai-themed shopping and sightseeing street stretching approximately 800 meters from Sakaiminato Station to the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum. Established in 1993, the street is lined on both sides with 178 bronze statues of characters from Mizuki Shigeru's work, including Kitaro, Neko-Musume, and Nezumi-Otoko.
A major renovation in 2018 widened the footpath and improved accessibility. From sunset until 10 p.m., the bronze statues are illuminated and yokai shadow-play projections are cast along the street, creating an atmosphere entirely different from daytime. Souvenir shops and restaurants line the road—including many serving seafood rice bowls—so visitors can round off the experience with dinner.
Starting from Sakaiminato Station, the entire route can be walked, making a half-day itinerary that includes the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum a popular choice. Numerous spots along the way, such as Yokai Shrine and Kappa-no-Izumi, reward those who take their time and explore at a leisurely pace.
