Inasa Beach

The mythological shore where the gods of Japan are said to have negotiated the transfer of the land, and where deities from across the country are welcomed each lunar October.

About this place

Inasa Beach is a sandy shore located approximately 1 km west of Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine. According to Japanese mythology, this is the place where Takemikazuchi, a deity dispatched from Takamagahara (the Plain of High Heaven), negotiated the 'transfer of the land' with Okuninushi, making it a site of profound mythological significance.

On the night of the 10th day of the tenth lunar month, the Kamimukae Shinto ritual is held on this beach ahead of the Kamiari Festival at Izumo Taisha, welcoming the eight million deities said to gather from across Japan. In Izumo, the tenth lunar month is called 'Kamiari-zuki' (Month of the Gods Present), in contrast to other regions where it is called 'Kannazuki' (Month with No Gods).

Near the center of the beach stands a small rocky islet known as Benten-jima, enshrining the deity Toyotamabiko. At sunset, the sight of the sun sinking into the sea creates a breathtaking scene that draws photographers. The beach is within walking distance of Izumo Taisha and can be reached on foot along the traditional Kamimukae-no-michi path.
