A seaside hot spring resort said to be the birthplace of the folk song 'Kaigarabushi,' with over 500 years of history.
Hamamura Onsen is a seaside spa town located in Keta-cho, Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture. Set in a scenic environment overlooking the Sea of Japan, the hot spring is said to have a history of over 500 years. It is also known as 'Sagi no Yu' (Heron's Bath) from a legend in which a beautiful white heron healed its wounds here, and its abundant sulfate spring waters have long welcomed weary travelers.
The area is also celebrated as the birthplace of 'Kaigarabushi,' a traditional folk song representative of Tottori. The atmosphere of the town where this beloved melody was born still lingers in the hot spring streets today. In front of JR Hamamura Station there is a free foot bath, and another foot bath can be enjoyed at the nearby 'Yasaho Park.'
The hot spring quarter, lined with inns serving fresh local seafood, is an ideal base for enjoying both the sea and the hot springs. With JR Hamamura Station on the San'in Main Line just steps away, it is also well suited for visitors arriving by train.
