The legendary setting of the White Rabbit of Inaba, celebrated as a shrine of matchmaking and healing.
Hakuto Shrine is an ancient shrine enshrined along the coast of Hakuto in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture. It is known as the setting of the myth of the White Rabbit of Inaba, recorded in the Kojiki — Japan's oldest chronicle — in which a wounded white rabbit is said to have been healed by Okuninushi no Mikoto near the adjacent Hakuto Beach.
The principal deity enshrined here is the Hakuto deity, who in legend acted as a messenger of fate between Okuninushi no Mikoto and Princess Yakami, leading the shrine to be venerated as a god of matchmaking and medicine. The grounds preserve sacred sites from the myth, including the 'Omimike Ike' purification pond and the islet called 'Okinoshima,' and charming stone rabbit figurines are placed throughout the precincts.
The shrine is approximately 40 minutes by Hinomaru Bus from JR Tottori Station and shares a parking area with the roadside station 'Shinwa no Sato Shirousagi' facing Hakuto Beach. Visitors can stroll through the world of ancient myth while taking in views of the sea.
