Home to a Japanese garden ranked No. 1 in Japan for over 20 consecutive years by an American specialty journal, about 30 minutes by car from Yonago.
The Adachi Museum of Art opened in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, in 1970. Founded by businessman Zenko Adachi out of deep affection for his hometown, the museum houses more than 120 masterworks of modern Japanese painting, including celebrated works by Yokoyama Taikan.
The museum's greatest highlight is its Japanese garden spanning some 50,000 tsubo (approximately 165,000 sq. m.). Featuring a dry-landscape garden, a white-sand-and-pine garden, and several other distinct spaces that change with the seasons, it has been ranked No. 1 in Japan for 22 consecutive years by the American journal 'Journal of Japanese Gardening.'
The museum is accessible by free shuttle bus from JR Yasugi Station in about 20 minutes, making it easy to spend a leisurely half-day enjoying both the art and the garden. Paired with the Gassan-Toda Castle Ruins nearby, it forms a classic Yasugi sightseeing itinerary.
